Barbell Set Buying Guide

Buying a barbell set is an important investment, and there are few things you should consider when deciding the right package for you, including the plate type, materials, finish, handling, maintenance and the bar.

Plate Type - There are advantages and disadvantages to choosing Olympic weights over standard weights, but while standard plates are cheaper and can do the job for many home gyms, Olympic weights are more expensive for good reasons.

Plate Materials – plates are usually made of iron, steel, plastic and sand or rubber, and you should consider your lifting space to avoid damage to either the plate or the floor.

Finish – Differences in the manufacturing process of Olympic Plates, referred to as milled and non-milled plates. Non-milled plates are cheaper but have a larger weight variance than milled plates.

Handling – Plates are often designed for easier handling, but this may add to the thickness of the plate.

Maintenance – Rubber or plastic plates tend to be easier to maintain, and iron or steel plates need to be stored and maintained carefully to avoid damage.

Bar – a good quality bar can have a significant impact on performance. It’s worth investing in a bar with the right strength, sleeve, whip and finish to get the most from your set.
