Why do people go to the gym?   Let’s be honest, a lot of us go to the gym to build upper body size and strength – big pectorals, big arms. However, it’s never a good idea to focus on upper body strength and forget about lower body strength. A great physique is about balance and symmetry, making sure all parts of the body are properly balanced.

There are 3 main muscle groups:

Quads - composed of the Rectus Femoris, Vastus Laterallis, Vastus Intermedius and Vastus Mediallis muscles. This muscle group forms the large fleshy mass which covers the front and sides of the thigh. Together, these muscles act as strong extensors of the knee, flexor of the hips and stabilizer of the knee cap. Great exercises include Barbell Full Squats, Hack Squats and Leg Extensions.

Hamstrings - composed of the Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus and Bicep Femoris (Long Head and Short Head) muscles. These form the posterior thigh muscles, and act to extend the hip, flex the knee and rotate the knee both inwards and outwards when the knee is bent.  Barbell Lunges, Lying Leg Curl and Seated Leg Curl exercises are ideal for working the hamstrings.

Calves - composed of the Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles. Located at the back of the lower leg, these muscles provide plantar flexion (ankle extension) and stabilize the ankle. Seated and standing Calf Raises are probably the best exercises to work your calves.

All of these muscles are important in walking and running, as well as balance and stabilization. However, as these muscles are used so much in every-day life, building mass requires dedication and hard work. This is where leg muscle exercise machines come in. These machines allow you to push your leg muscles harder than body weight alone.

Get in contact with us and we’ll guide you on the best way to use these machines. We’ll make sure you have the right equipment at the right price.
