Ski Erg Machines

In Australia, we don’t know a lot about Nordic skiing, either recreationally or in competition. Nordic skiing is an exhilarating and aerobically demanding sport, and encompasses the various types of skiing in which the toe of the ski boot is fixed to the binding in a manner that allows the heel to rise off the ski. In contrast, in Alpine skiing, the boot is attached to the ski from toe to heel. Recreational disciplines include cross-country skiing and Telemark skiing. Olympic events include cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined (in which athletes complete both cross-country ski and ski jump).

The biomechanics of competitive cross-country skiing and ski jumping have been the subject of serious study. Cross-country skiing requires strength and endurance and ski jumping requires aerodynamic efficiency, both of which requirements translate into specific skills to be optimized in training and competition. Given the extremely high physical requirements of the sport, it's no surprise that Nordic skiers are amongst the most physically fit athletes in the world. In peak athletes, the standard way of comparing fitness levels is by measuring the maximum rate of Oxygen (O2) consumption by the body during exercise, commonly written as VO2max. This is the standard criterion measure of aerobic endurance fitness. The VO2max of the average young untrained male is about 3.5 litres/minute or 45 ml/min/kg and world class male endurance athletes in sports such as cycling typically achieve scores in excess of 80 ml/kg/min, and occasionally a few may exceed 90 ml/kg/min. In fact, 2 of the top 3 records for V02max measurements are from Norwegian cross-country skiing. That is how fit these athletes need to be to compete professionally.

So why does this matter to us? The ski erg machine mimics the mechanism of Nordic skiing, and makes this incredible aerobic exercise accessible to anyone.  There are 3 mains reasons to use this incredible machine:

  1. It is great for upper body cardio;
  2. It provides unparalleled upper body strength-endurance like no other. While the rower is very effective, the Ski Erg is even better as it keeps you upright and load bearing. You’re not strapped in and you have to stabilize your body while your legs are moving on the Ski Erg. You are also pulling in a more downward direction, which is going to hit the muscles and stabilizers us.
  3. It is ideal for injury rehab, as it is a low impact exercise. Similar to swimming, the ski erg offers a low impact, upper body driven solution that allows you to regain strength and endurance without risking existing injuries.

The Ski Erg machine is an unbelievable machine that is a really great way to gain strength and endurance. It is compact enough to be stored and used at home, making it a very effective way to get your cardio, while building your upper body.
