Why use barbells?

  • Barbells allow you to slowly increase your weight in increments each week, and clearly track your progress.

  • Targets both upper and lower body muscle groups (squats, deadlifts, etc.)

  • Barbells are stable, using two hands instead of one. Because of this, it’s much easier (and more effective) to go heavy, especially for lower body exercises. Using two hands allows for more control than one hand for a dumbbell, for example.

Tips for using barbells

  • In order to lift barbells at home, make sure you have a squat rack, barbell, a bench and enough weights. While this can be a fairly sizeable cost up front, it’s definitely a good investment over the long term.

  • There are different types of barbells, including the smaller, straight barbells ranging from 4-7 feet long. These are great for barbell curls and military presses. There are also fixed weight barells, which are shorter in length.

  • There are a lot of different exercises you can do with the barbell, so have a look on the internet to find the best approach for you. Make sure you understand which muscle groups you’re targeting, and find specific exercises for those muscle groups.

If travelling, taking a barbell along can be impractical or it might be difficult to get at a commercial gym. Other equipment options for strength training include dumbbells, Kettlebells, Functional Trainers, Power Towers and Smith Machines which are also available in our store.
